A Sports Day Musical  runs from June 1st - 30th at Polka Theatre

Ella is late. Again. And on today of all days:Sports Day 2012…

It’s her last day at primary school and her last chance to show she’s more than just the shy new girl. If only her Mum could watch her race, but that looks about as likely as her team winning gold. This funny, heart-warming musical follows four students and their teacher Mr Budge in a story of falling over, getting up and carrying on. With original music and dance, Polka’s feel-good musical brings an extra-special sportsday to life this summer. Cheer and cry for your favourite team as they compete at cycling, archery, the high jump, gymnastics and plenty of running! Is it really the taking part that matters? Join us and find out…

“If you want to be a writer, don’t. If you want to write, nothing will stop you” Fay Weldon

You will already have been writing. It may be a secret occupation. But now you want to move forward and enter the world of shared experience. During this course we will be looking at other people’s work and our own and critiquing it with grace and kindness. And from this we will learn a lot. It can be scary and you need to be brave. But it can also be fun and intensely rewarding. I have been a professional writer for 28 years and along the way have learned how to dig myself out of holes, how to keep going when I have no idea where I’m going, how to find stories when my mind’s a blank and how to cajole myself to a place of creativity. Some of it’s art but much of it is just hard work and technique. This bit I can help you with.

The only way to learn to write is to do it.

You have stories to tell and ideas to explore. During this five day course set in the peace and mystery of the desert, you will discover just how boundless your potential for uncovering those ideas and stories is. We will work on accessing stories from your own lived experience, how to develop credible rounded characters, how to express yourself in someone else’s voice, how to structure, edit and research. By the end of the week you will have learned techniques and acquired confidence to progress with your writing and you will hopefully have had a very good time.
